He then attended junior high school at Colégio Pedro II, a boarding school. He obtained his bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Brazil (1957), with a specialization course in Spanish Language and Literature (1958). He holds a PhD in Literature. He has taught at numerous institutions at home and abroad, among them the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the Universidade Federal Fluminense. He taught at the latter for more than three decades and became an Emeritus Professor in 2002.","extract_html":"
